Don Rich (Buck Owens lead player) was one of my favorites. His lead playing was simple, different, and he really enjoyed playing. He never tried to steal the spotlight from anyone. He acted like there were a thousand other guys who could do what he did just as well as him. He never thought he was anything special. He was one of my favorites, who were yours????

So which are the records he really shines on? I hear there's an instrumental hits album, and even a Don Rich collection CD(!?)

I listened to the Carnegie Hall concert CD yesterday at a store... too much of a hobo country album for my taste (sorry I am not a real coutry fan at all). And too little of those lovely twangy Telecaster country solos and licks. I like Redd Volkaert's solo album Telewacker, that's full of twangy tele.

Two twang guitar album lists on amazon:

Roy Clark's playing is really good. Its funny how Buck Owens associated with such good people who could really play. I heard a story years ago how Roy Clark returned a fee for a county fair because the ticket sales didn't cover the fee. He felt if he couldn't earn enough to cover his fee that he didn't deserve it.

The Don Rich Anthology is pretty good. My favorites though is the Tiger By the Tail album. Pretty Good stuff.

I also love Roy Nichols, who was Merle Haggard's original guitar player and played on a bunch of Haggard albums. Him, Phil Baugh and James Burton are amazing on Haggard's THe Bottle Let Me Down album (although it's kinda hard to tell who's who). Another great track that Roy plays on is "Honky Tonk Nighttime Man". Has one of the best country solos ever.

Incidently, Redd Volkaet is Merle Haggards new guitar player, and you can usually catch him, with Merle if he comes through your town. He's awesome live.
